TREELOGY - An Homage to the Joshua Tree

In this episode, Boris the Bus takes Delirium Musicum musicians Etienne, YuEun, Nao, Joo, and Ryan to Joshua Tree National Park to workshop one of the 3 pieces of Treelogy in its natural environment. The 1971 tomato-red bus is happy to make so many musician friends, who will discover the sounds of the Californian desert together, which inspired the composition of Gabriella Smith for Delirium Musicum.

Etienne Gara, violinist and Artistic Director of Delirium Musicum, has been named Artist in Residence at the Soraya and developed TREELOGY, together with Thor Steingraber, the Executive Director of this state-of-the-art venue, on the CSU Northridge campus, in California. Treelogy is an homage to the 3 iconic Californian trees that so severely burned during the 2020 fires. Three composers have been commissioned, one for each tree:

Grammy Awards-winning artist Billy Childs, who writes about the Giant Sequoias, will join Delirium Musicum playing the piano with his jazz trio (piano, drums, and bass).

Gabriella Smith, whose music takes us to Joshua Tree National Park, recorded the sounds of plucked barrel cacti, coyotes, and the surrounding nature, creating soundtracks that will mix with Delirium Musicum's performance on acoustic string instruments.

Steve Mackey, also a Grammy-winning composer, portrays the Coastal Redwoods, and will also join Delirium Musicum on stage for his violin and electric guitar concerto. Steve Mackey on electric guitar and Etienne Gara on violin will engage, with the other 15 musicians of Delirium Musicum, in a musical battle for the giant trees with hints of Led Zeppelin and Bartok, while being 100% Mackey.
